Qualifications:

 

  • South Carolina certification as required for the position or eligible to obtain a Career and Technology Education (CATE) Work-Based Licensure authorizing service as a Culinary Arts Teacher
  • Possession of a ServSafe safety and sanitation certificate
  • Strong background in the culinary field
  • Teaching and supervisory experience preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

 

Job Goal

 

To plan, organize, and establish the Culinary Arts Program with a willingness and ability to teach high school students the skills of culinary curriculum. 

Performance Responsibilities

 

  • Teaching ServSafe, sanitation, nutrition, culinary skills, and career opportunities to high school students.
  • Instructing students on food preparation, food production, and the overall structure and workflow of a kitchen.
  • Teaching students about supplies and equipment used in the culinary arts field and safety guidelines.
  • Teaching students about quality and cost containment standards.
  • Teaching students about inventory, supplies, pricing, menu planning, safety, and sanitation issues that arise in the restaurant business.
  • Able to make industry connections promoting service-learning, cooperative education, and work based learning opportunities for the students.
  • Ability to work with diverse students and must possess sensitivity to student cultural needs.
  • Additional work hours outside the normal workday required periodically for purposes of providing additional learning experiences for the students in catering and hosting events.

Physical Demands

 

Working in a kitchen involves exposure to some unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and unpleasant odors. There is moderate physical activity required. A culinary arts teacher should be able to lift 25 pounds and be fit enough to stand and/or walk for most of the workday.

Terms of Employment:

 

190 days; salary and work year to be established by the Board

           

Evaluation:

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
