Title: Mental Health Counselor
Overview:
Mental health counselors work with individuals to promote optimum mental health. Mental health counselors work with students and families to help in overcoming emotional and psychological problems.
Job Description:
- Provide direct mental health services to assigned clients, including diagnostic assessment, individual/family/group therapy, and crisis intervention.
- Create treatment plans and complete progress summaries.
- Provide support to students who are currently in, or have recently been in, crisis through risk assessments and follow-up care.
- Provide coordination of services and reentry support for students returning from a psychiatric hospitalization or treatment program.
- May provide support to students who are in our alternative program.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and provide clinical supervision for interns/field study.
- Provide consultation to school staff regarding mental health issues of assigned clients, as appropriate
- Provide training to staff, parents, and students with a focus on prevention.
- Provide complete and timely documentation of support services rendered.
- Attend appropriate in-service training programs, staff meetings, and individual student conferences as requested by the supervisor and in compliance with established district guidelines.
- Keep all student and school-related information confidential in accordance with federal and state guidelines and Board policy
Job Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field
- Preferred minimum of 1 year of counseling-related experience
- Eligible for licensure Supervision will be provided to gain professional licensure
Skill/Effort:
- Ability to make sound recommendations for appropriate student outcomes and assists in the interpretation of programs.
- Ability to read, interpret, and explain materials from professional journals and books, including school code and legal documents.
- Ability to interact effectively with a variety of audiences and individuals.
- Ability to interpret and administer board policy, administrative procedures, and State Law procedures affecting students’ lives in school.
Working Conditions:
Office environment with little exposure to environmental conditions. Physical demands are restricted to general office activities requiring the movement/lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five pounds. Routine local travel is required; occasional overnight travel is required. Requires the ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require considerable attention and meeting deadlines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is continuously interacting with the public, staff, and students. The employee frequently must meet multiple demands from several people. The employee is regularly required to sit and stand. The employee is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Occasionally the employee must use hand/grip strength to operate office equipment.
