Elementary School Counselor

Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in School Counseling or a related field
  • Valid South Carolina certification/licensure as a School Counselor or eligibility for appropriate certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development and elementary counseling practices
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with teachers, staff, and families
  • Proficiency with technology and data systems
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate ethical professional behavior
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

    Job Description:
    • Implements a comprehensive school counseling program aligned to academic, career, and social/emotional development for elementary students
    • Provides individual and small group counseling to support student success, behavior, and well-being
    • Collaborates with teachers, administrators, and support staff to address student needs and promote a positive school climate
    • Partners with parents/guardians to provide strategies and resources that support student development and achievement
    • Assists in the identification and support of students experiencing academic, behavioral, or social/emotional challenges
    • Coordinates with outside agencies (e.g., mental health providers, child protective services, community organizations) to support student needs
    • Supports the implementation of school-wide programs such as character education, bullying prevention, and social-emotional learning
    • Uses data to monitor student progress, identify trends, and inform counseling interventions and school improvement efforts
    • Participates in multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and intervention teams
    • Provides crisis intervention and support as needed
    • Maintains accurate and confidential student records and documentation in compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines
    • Assists with student transitions (e.g., kindergarten entry, grade-level transitions, middle school readiness)
    • Delivers classroom guidance lessons on topics such as decision-making, interpersonal skills, and emotional regulation
    • Supports attendance initiatives and student engagement efforts
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the school
